Scotish Terrier

Regarded as the National Terrier of Scotland, the "Scottie" as he is fondly known, is a hardy, courageous and tenacious little fellow. Primarily used for routing such vermin as fox, otter and wildcat, the Scottish Terrier is a very agile independent dog, giving the impression of being willing to go anywhere and do anything. His stately gait, proudly held pointed ears and powerful build, are in sharp contrast to his low slung structure and lack of height!

Inclined to be a one-man dog, the Scottish Terrier has a keen temperament and is wary with strangers. He will not stand any nonsense from anyone. However, he is totally devoted to his owner and kindly with those he knows. A real character of a dog, the "Scottie" is great fun to own but is more suitable for adults than families with young children.

Many people think of the Scottish Terrier as just being a black dog whereas his coat may be black, wheaten (pale yellow or fawn colour) or brindle, all of which are equally correct. His harsh, dense and wiry coat may require professional grooming from time to time, in order to keep it in good order.

Schnauzer (Miniature)

The Schnauzer originated in Germany and acquired his name from the German words "schnauze" (snout or muzzle) and "schnauzbart" (moustache). As the name suggests, all three of the Schnauzer breeds are endowed with abundant facial furnishings.

By far the most popular of the three varieties, and a perfect scaled-down version of the other two, is the Miniature Schnauzer. He was developed as a small farm dog, in particular being used as a barnyard ratter. His temperament combines high spirits, absolute reliability, strength, endurance and vigour. Very friendly with everyone he knows, including children, he nevertheless makes an excellent guard dog and watchdog when the occasion demands, as well as being an outstanding companion.

Left in the rough, the Schnauzer has a fairly ragged appearance, but shaped and trimmed he looks spectacular. Few breeds repay care and attention to grooming as much as he does. His neat size and clean habits make him the ideal dog for the home.

Schipperke

The word Schipperke is Flemish for little skipper, and derives from the fact that these small active dogs were used as watchdogs, companions and ratters on barges and riverboats of Belgium.

A plucky, lively little dog with an air of self-importance, the Schipperke seems unaware of the limits of its size, defending his territory and family with a fearlessness that would do the biggest of dogs proud. Continually preoccupied with what is happening around him, particularly what is going on behind closed doors or about any object that has been moved, the Schipperke is a real little busybody. Always reserved and wary of strangers he is very careful with anything that has been given to him to look after, being indefatigable in his duties as custodian of the household. He is a good mouser and ratter and enjoys hunting small game if the opportunity presents itself. Loyal and devoted, the Schipperke embodies a lot of dog in a diminutive frame.

Samoyed

The Samoyed originated in the north-west of Siberia, where he was used for herding reindeer and pulling sledges. He took his name from the nomadic Samoyed tribe, who regarded these dogs as members of the family and shared their sleeping quarters with them In later years the "Sammie" as he is affectionately known, was largely responsible for the successful exploration of the Arctic Circle.

Constant companionship with man through the years has given the Samoyed an uncanny, almost human, understanding. Gentle, kindly, with a smiling face and dark intelligent eyes, it has been said that this big white dog carries in its face and heart the spirit of Christmas the whole year through. Certainly he seems to have retained something of the happy and childlike spirit of his earliest masters.

Intelligent, dignified and independent, the Samoyed makes a delightful and devoted family pet.

Saluki

One of the oldest known breeds of dogs, which has existed virtually unchanged for many thousands of years, the Saluki was known by the Arabs as El Hor - the Noble One. Used for coursing gazelle, fox and hare, the aristocratic Saluki was held in such high esteem that he was never sold, only given away and then only to extremely worthy recipients. He was permitted to enjoy the choicest tidbits from the plate and the finest linen from the bed and even declared to be a sacred animal.

A gentle, dignified dog, the Saluki is somewhat aloof at first and does not quickly take to strangers. But once he attaches himself to a person, he does so for life. Affectionate without being overly demonstrative, the Saluki is nevertheless extremely devoted to his owner and family.

His beauty is that of the thoroughbred horse, displaying extreme grace and symmetry in his clean-cut lines. There are two varieties of Saluki which are similar in all respects except for the fact that the Smooth variety carries no feathering.

St. Bernard

Bred for centuries in Switzerland by the monks from the St Bernard Hospice, some 3,000 metres up in the Swiss Alps, this breed is famous for its legendary rescues. The St Bernard's sense of smell enables him to scent a human against the wind up to two miles away, and sense blizzards and avalanches up to 20 minutes before they occur. His ability to locate bodies buried in as much as 3 metres of snow has resulted in him finding countless travellers trapped in drifts and leading them to safety.

Affectionately known as a Saint, the St Bernard is the genial gentleman of the canine world - very powerful but extremely placid. He adores children, and makes an intelligent, loyal and affectionate companion dog. His deep resonant bark is a marvellous deterrent to burglars. His hallmark is his huge, majestic head and benevolent dignified expression. He may be either rough or smooth coated.

Naturally a dog of this size requires room and is expensive to feed. But the rewards of owning one of these gentle giants more than compensates - just ask any St Bernard owner!

Rottweiler

Originally known as the Butcher's Dog of Rottweil, after the small German town where the breed developed, the Rottweiler was a cattle and guard dog of great repute. Not only would he drive the cattle to market, but once they had been sold, the money would be put in a leather purse tied to his collar to be protected from thieves on the way home. As well as providing a droving and banking service for the butcher, the Rottweiler also pulled a cart around town doing the meat deliveries!

When livestock transport became mechanised, the Rottweiler's role gradually changed to that of a police dog and guard dog, even serving during World War I. Today he is primarily a companion dog, with his dignified, unexcitable nature and natural cleanliness making him well suited to being part of the household.

The Rottweiler has a natural guarding instinct and should be supervised around visitors and visiting children. He is very loyal and affectionate to his owners but his self assured and fearless temperament, coupled with his great strength make socialisation and early training essential.

Rottweiler owners are encouraged to take their dogs to obedience training.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a strapping great dog which was used by the native warriors of Southern Africa to hunt lions.

By necessity, the Rhodesian Ridgeback had to be extremely versatile. He needed to be fast enough to chase and cut off escaping game, strong enough to pull down wounded bucks, courageous enough to hold lions at bay, and tough enough to withstand extremes in temperature, including going without water for up to twenty-four hours at a time. Added to that he needed to be a superlative watchdog to keep guard over the Boer farmers, their families and livestock.

Today's Rhodesian Ridgeback embodies all the strength, fearlessness, agility and endurance of his forebears. He is aloof with strangers, however providing he is socialised and trained from an early age, he is quiet and well behaved, very attached to his family and reliable with children. He is easy to care for, co-operative and responsive to training.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a short, sleek coat the colour of a lion, with a clearly defined ridge of hair down the back growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.

Pyrenean Mountain Dog

One of the most beautiful of all breeds, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog was originally bred to guard the flocks from wolves and bears, and to protect the shepherd. He was also a valued sentry for fortresses and chateaux where his immense strength, around-the-clock vigilance, innate ability to discriminate between friend and foe, and utter fearlessness made him worth his weight in gold. Additionally, troubadours travelling from castle to castle were often accompanied by these magnificent dogs.

Nowadays, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog's main role is as companion and guardian of the home. Despite his size, he makes an ideal house pet, being the perfect all-round dog for town or country and is a gentle playmate for children. His splendid white jacket requires regular grooming but no trimming.

Pug

The Pug originated in the Far East but subsequently came to prominence in Europe where he was a great favourite of European high society and royalty. In Europe he was treated as a toy and dressed up in bizarre fashions, while he lived in the lap of luxury.

Today the Pug's main claim to fame is as a much loved pet. Extremely friendly, he attaches himself to a household and family with complete acceptance of the fact that he is an essential part of that lifestyle. Although small, he requires no coddling, and his roguish face soon wiggles its way into the hearts of men, women and especially children, for whom the Pug has a special affinity. His overwhelming reason for living seems to be that of being close to and pleasing his folks. In his old age, he becomes very much the rather wheezy old relation, sitting in the most comfortable chair in front of the fire! A delightful dog to own.

The Pug enjoys fetching a ball or playing with you, but does not require extensive exercise. Similarly, minimal coat care is needed, although his eyes and head wrinkles need to be regularly checked and cleaned. He can be miserable in hot weather, so keep an eye out for possible breathing problems and make sure he does not become stressed.

This dapper little character can be somewhat headstrong, but his impish charm more than compensates making it easy to spoil him, which he naturally accepts as his rightful due!
