Collie (Smooth)

The smooth coated Collie has never enjoyed the popularity of its better known relative, the rough coated Collie, but both trace their history back to working sheepdogs in Scotland. The smooth coated Collie was principally a drover's dog used for guiding cows and sheep to market and did not require the profuse coat of the variety which stood guard over the flocks at pasture. In all other requirements the two varieties are identical.

No longer in demand as a herder, today's Collie has transferred these abilities to serving as a devoted family dog, with a particular affinity for small children. Never happier than when he has a job to do, the Collie delights in adopting the dual role of companion and watchdog.

The Collie (Smooth) has a short, flat coat with very dense undercoat and comes in tonings of sable and white, tricolour or blue merle and requires a minimum of grooming.

Like all working dogs, the Collie (Smooth) needs regular exercise to keep him in trim. Intuitive and anxious to please, he also responds well to training.
